The communication aspects of the Dead Poets Society Essay Example For Students

The communication aspects of the Dead Poets Society Essay Perspectives, gender, communication theories, persuasion, language, verbal and nonverbal communication, interpersonal relationships, public peaking, intercultural communicationthese are all included and exemplified in this film. The setting of this movie is at a prestigious all boys high school called Walton. Many prominent schools around the country up to the sass still did not allow girls into their institutions at that time, but how quickly this has changed within the last half century. Nearly all schools are co-educational now, which in a large part is the result of how gender roles change so rapidly in our society. Now there are even debates going on about whether there should be a difference when we use the terms sex and gender. We can probably call this gender divide back then as sexism, or the exploitation of one sex by the other for a personal agenda. It wasnt that women were getting taken advantage of literally but it was the fact that they did not have the right to the same education facilities as the men of the country, and thus they are confined to Jobs that are within the home/family. There are many perspectives at play in this movie. We will write a custom essay on The communication aspects of the Dead Poets Society specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As we have learned, perspectives are different views we have on the world based on our culture and upbringing. It has to deal with how any person views the world at large or any small piece of existence. These views are often founded on ones morals, values, beliefs and life experiences. We quickly notice how the perspectives of Neil Perry differ tremendously from his father, Mr.. Perry. Because Neil comes from a middle class family, his father wishes to see him succeed by ultimately becoming a doctor. Mr.. Perry knows how tough the world is and how hard it is Just to stay in the middle class of America; his life experiences contribute to this selfish perspective he has on Nils life. Neil wouldnt understand his father because he hasnt gone out into the world yet, working and trundling to make money to feed the family, so he wouldnt know where his dad was coming from. With the same token, Mr.. Perry does not understand Nils perspectives because he is not Neil himself and wouldnt know Nils ambitions and morals and values if he doesnt even want Neil to consider any other option besides going to medical school. We also notice that Mr.. John Keating marches to the beat of his own drum, having a different perspective from the rest of the faculty at Walton especially the director of the school, Mr.. Nolan. Mr.. Nylons perspective on running the school is based on radiation, conformity, and discipline because he has seen this kind of teaching work well in the past. It also has to do with his belief that good students are people who conform to the standards of society and uphold traditional structures. He does not believe that seventeen year olds can think for themselves yet or if anyone can ever reach that point of intellectual ability to think for themselves. Sure this kind of teaching brings out really good students and prepares them well for attending an League College but this kind of teaching neither makes them individuals nor good tizzies in the future. Mr.. Keating on the other hand has a completely different perspective on teaching students, especially young and impressionable seventeen year old young men. His teachings are based on freethinking, choice, and freedom. Mr.. Keating wants his students to be able to overlook societal standards and not absorb everything that they are taught but instead, step back and take a look at everything and put all this information into perspective by themselves. This way the students learn how to be individuals who have opinions and thoughts of their own thou having to fall in line with the rest of the world Just because higher authority figures say you must do it that way. The flaw with this kind of teaching is that it could create rebels who do not completely understand the idea of what it is to be a free thinker. It doesnt mean that they should Just turn everything into anarchy and do as they please; it Just means that they should be cautious of the information they are learning because not everything they learn is completely right all the time. Sometimes we must be able to argue with the text and consider our own opinions ND beliefs. In the movie, Mr.. Keating can be seen as the perfect persuader. .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .postImageUrl , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:hover , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:visited , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:active { border:0!important; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:active , .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2c187bd75ebcb50f3c816e11428ade1b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: 1914 war poem EssayThere are four elements to having a good persuasive speechthe speech itself, the audience, the resources, and you and Mr.. Keating utilizes all four of these tools to persuade the boys. His resources are mainly a variety of poets, such as Whitman, Thoreau, and Tennyson, to back up his own thinking. His audience is probably classified as the easiest to persuade because they are all young and impressionable adolescents seeking guidance at this stage in their lives. They dont know their paths in lives; all hat they know up to this point comes from listening to their parents and teachers. The boys had been able to experience seventeen years of life on earth but that is still too early for them to make any value Judgments on how the world works or how they can contribute to society as great people. They are all still on the receiving end of this process of learning to becoming adults. The most important aspects of how Mr.. Keating is so persuasive are his speeches and his passion when giving these speeches. Mr.. Keating starts out the first day of classes by anchoring his philosophy n the Latin phrase Carper Diem, translated to English meaning seize the day! He makes his students look at an old black and white picture of past students who had also attended Walton and tells them that they were all once youthful and strong Just like they are now. But they did not seize the day and make the most of their lives while they could. They were too busy conforming to the standards of the world, trying to become something very professional and well established that they forgot th e main focus on life and to value whats most important. Mr.. Keating says that things eke law, medicine, and business are important and necessary to sustain life poetry, love, romance, beauty is what we stay alive and live for. When he WA describing the Dead Poet Society back in his day, one of his lines was poetry from our tongues like honey, spirits soared, women swooned and gods were With his language being strong in voice and diction, having an enigmatic yet structure and having the verbal directness to form a sense of urgency to take advantage of each and every day, its difficult for anyone to not feel his desire boys to become something great. He wants his students to understand that art of life is Just to enjoy and self indulge, being able to put your own mind without having to listen to others. Another part of the reason why Mr.. Keating was so impressive as a persuade his use of nonverbal communication. Studies have shown that about fifty to five percent of communication is nonverbal. There are many nonverbal asps conversation or speech that you cant get through the verbal part, such as t emotions attached, the behavior and actions, and the importance of the topic Nonverbal communication is powerful and is completely tied in to how you yourself as a person. When Mr.. Keating told his students to rip out that first their poetry book by Mr.. Pritchard, it showed his anger and his fire to ignore conventions of what makes poetry good because in Mr.. Seatings mind, poet emotion and heart that should not and can not be measured on some magi scale determined by some person who should tell us how to Judge or intern poem. If he had Just said that Mr.. Pritchard was wrong without the accompany of page tearing, the students wouldnt have gotten the same effect; the rip his encouragement of individuality so much more powerful. There are so m examples of how Mr.. Keating makes use of nonverbal communication to star his persuasion. He makes his students huddle together when he wants to tee something important to make the setting a lot more intimate so that they ca forget they are in a classroom and make it more like friends speaking ammo He made his students kick soccer balls while screaming out famous literary make them have that energy and vigor, instilling in them a passion Just like He made his students march in the courtyard to show them how easy it is of person to get sucked into the nature of conformity in our society. .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .postImageUrl , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:hover , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:visited , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:active { border:0!important; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:active , .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098 .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3b236736971284adc77f28bae4aa4098:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry and Literature EssayHe urges u maintain our own beliefs in the face of others even when we feel the need f acceptance; we must trust our beliefs and thoughts because they are unique they are our own. Even after so many lessons on individuality and free think students still fell into a uniform march, exemplifying how conformity can De without us even knowing. The students would not have believed him if they actually started marching because they would have thought they were too s fall into that trap all over again. The most important of Mr.. Seatings nonvoter exercises would have to be the time when he made his students walk on top ask. His goal was to make them see things in a different light. Sometimes literally see things differently in order to think differently. He tells them to c what the author thinks but also consider what you think. You must strive to own voice because the longer you wait the less likely you are to find it. Thro most men lead lives of quiet desperation. Again hes using a FAA as his resource and letting himself and his language and emotion persuading. Dead Poets Society is very good at demonstrating the communion interpersonal relationships. At the start of the movie, the boys w friend each other because of psychological, sociological, and p The pragmatic reason is the easiest one to understand because we all function off needs and desires. The boys were all pretty m school so the only way they could fulfill their desire of communion was through each other. The pragmatic theory is also what drive pursue Kuris Deanerys. The sociological reason behind the b friendship was because of the social roles and rules they were c they liked each other and befriended each out of want for com people, they had no choice but to befriend each other because t there people they knew of other than the people in their school. Why they befriended each other was the psychological reason. T experiences, coming from similar backgrounds, and they all shark feelings, attitudes, and values that Mr.. Keating taught so they De psychological traits in common. The forming of friendships between the boys could also be expel Constructionist Model. This model combines the psychological a aspects of the previous theory and tries to explain how friendship are determined. The model is made up of language, roles, rules, culture, values and morals and the theory is that we relate best eave the same ratios or mathematical equations as we do. This because they were all similar in these traits so no wonder they b friends so fast. We could probably categorize the group that the boys and Mr.. K institutional group. The only reason why I would say small group group is that they were all pretty intimate towards one another a they had a strong bond with the exception of Richard Cameron. There were dyadic and triadic relationships. For example Todd a dyadic relationship, a relationship between two people. And if y guidance of Mr.. Keating to the mix, this could easily turn out to b allegations, a three person relationship. We could also categories between Neil and Mr.. Keating as a primary dyadic relationship and values because Mr.. Keating had more of an effect on Neil the Each boy in the group had a different role as well. For example, optimistic, and loved leader of the group. Charles Dalton would rebellious one with a good heart and Todd would be the shy quiz searching for an identity. We can actually try to understand Todd better by looking into his family dynamics. With his older brother being so intelligent and successful, a lot is expected of Todd.

Allegedly

Allegedly Allegedly Allegedly By Maeve Maddox A reader who edits financial news has observed that some writers seem to be unaware of the specific connotation of allegedly and gives this example: [Company name], an integrated automotive company, is allegedly to reduce expansion plan for its car rent company, from initially 4,000 units to 3,000 units of additional fleet. The word allegedly is not a suitable choice in the context of what seems to be a straightforward business report about an impending reduction in the fleet of a car rental agency. The writer of the piece has received the information from some source. The professional approach would be to name the source. If for some reason a known source must not be named, then the information can be â€Å"rumored.† In modern English usage, the words allege, alleged and allegedly must be used with care because they imply suspected illicit activity. In 1300, the verb allege meant, â€Å"to swear on oath† or â€Å"to submit as legal evidence.† In the 21st century, the verb allege means, â€Å"to claim something unproven as true, especially with reference to illicit or illegal behavior.† Allege, alleged, and the noun allegation are verbal hot potatoes. The Associated Press Stylebook devotes five and a half column inches to guidelines for its use. Writers are advised to avoid any suggestion that they are the ones doing the alleging. This means that the writer must identify the source of the allegation in the form of an authoritative person, agency, or official document. For example, In a civil antitrust lawsuit, the Justice Department alleged that CEOs of the publishing companies met regularly in private dining rooms of upscale Manhattan restaurants to discuss how to respond to steep discounting of their e-books by Amazon, a practice they disliked. Once the source of the accusation has been identified, the writer must then use alleged or allegedly when referring to whatever has been alleged. For example: She is being sued for the $78,000 in parish funds she allegedly misappropriated for her own personal and family use. Several SNC-Lavalin employees said they were aware of the alleged scheme. On the other hand, it’s possible to overdo the allegeds and allegedlys. In these examples, the word accused is sufficient: Mendham Police Accused Of Allegedly Targeting Young Drivers Evansville woman  accused of allegedly  embezzling thousands from local program. Alleged is not a word to use in referring to an event that actually took place. The following example is from a news item about a speaker accused of making racist remarks at a meeting that was attended by many people: The police [are] collecting statements from people who were present at the alleged meeting. The speaker’s remarks were alleged, not the meeting. The meeting really took place. Finally, there’s no need to use alleged when some other qualifier can do the job as well or better. Here are some options: professed purported supposed so-called ostensible putative unproven/unproved Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Writing Exercise #3(Critical Evaluation) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Writing Exercise #3(Critical Evaluation) - Essay Example The presence of the two serves as documents of giving historical evidence of significance in Venetian saint. In early literature, the cycle scholars identified these two canvases as the only works of ground cycle left unrecorded in the history of documents. However, in 1920, Rudolf Berliner published documents based on Sala Terrene cycle, which became the point of departure in the consideration of dating and documentation of paintings cycles. In contrast, the works of Berliner in the interpretation of the documents did not include any references of Mary Magdalene or Mary of Egypt, contributing to questions on the originality of the series by Hans Tietze. Therefore, the paintings’ cycle of documentations dates back in the times of Mary Magdalene and Mary of Egypt. Moreover, it is important to record documentations of history as it contributes to learning materials from the past times to the present periods with critical evidences as it depicted in the paintings’ cycles o f Sala Terrena. Three paintings of Mary Magdalene and Mary of Egypt are undocumented. Valentina Sapienza suggests that the two documents from 1582 and 1583 comprise payment evidence of several canvases that completes in Sala Terrena. This was contrary to Berliner’s assumption that Mary Magdalene and Mary of Egypt were left undocumented. Sapienza suggests that the payment of sixteen-azurite pigment lead to the indirect documentation of these paintings. Therefore, the works of paintings in Caravaggio and religion was a vital operation that earned a lot of attention in the past. It enabled many people in the past to earn good money and even promote different ideas in paintings to different parts of the areas. The paintings’ created changes in counter- reformation theology have different people perceived the paintings differently in more broad and diverse ways considering the presence of Mary Magdalene and Mary of Egypt in the paintings. Mergers and Acquisitions †The life of Hewlett †Packard Essay Example for Free

Mergers and Acquisitions – The life of Hewlett – Packard Essay The first big customer of HP was Walt Disney Studios. The company purchased eight oscillators from HP for their movie Fantasia. These oscillators were purchased in order to develop an innovative sound system for the movie. HP has incorporated profit sharing and social commitment in the company through its values and corporate objectives that have been with the company since 1957, these principles guide them to be focused and committed to the company and were founded by the co founders and are being followed to this day. Through trust, team work, innovation and integrity the company has been successful in making enough profits to finance their growth as well as keep all the stakeholders satisfied. They respect customer loyalty and the role of employees and there fore their contribution in the company. They look for opportunities and grow but not at the stake of society, they serve as an asset to the society and country where ever they are doing business. Dave Packard used a management technique that was incorporated into HP’s corporate culture. He called it â€Å"managing by walking around† which later came to be known as â€Å"management by Objectives† which had employee involvement, recognition and communication for better management and achievement of organizational goals. The company went public in the year 1957 and Bill and Dave have always given respect and appreciation for the employee’s efforts. Therefore after going public they gave the stock grants to the employees automatically who have been serving for at least six months in the company. This meant that the employees were given shares of the company, which will give them some form of ownership in the company and motivate them more for the performance and growth. The first acquisition of the company took place in the year 1958 of a high quality graphic producer company. The name of the company was F.L. Moseley Company of Pasadena, California. This acquisition was not seen as a threat to its flexibility because this gave opportunity to HP to enter into plotters market which was a needed for the company’s printer business. And to counter the problem of growing business the company had practiced decentralization of business divisions which will be responsible for their own products. Bill was looking for opportunities internationally for Hp to enter foreign markets and he found some in Europe after the Treaty of Rome and also the European Common market in the year 1957. These paved way for starting operation of Hp in the European markets and as Bill visited Europe he found it a viable decision and the company became global in the year 1959. The first joint venture of the company was in Asia with a Japanese company named Yokogawa Hewlett-Packard (YHP) in the year 1963. The CEO identified the factors that lead to major acquisitions by HP till the year 2005. HP was performing well in the industry. Portrayal of the Lower Class :: Sociology

Portrayal of the Lower Class When the words poverty comes up what are the first things that come to mind. Usually the first thing thought of is the perception of a man with a torn skiing cap, tattered plaid jacket, dirty gloves, no shoes and living under a bridge. This is, like most stereotypes the extremity of the problem. The homeless you see on the street does not exemplify everyone in poverty. Most live in a very small apartment or complex with some food and water. Poverty by definition is the state of having little or no money and few possessions. This definition even says that not all in poverty are without a home or food or even clothes, it simply states that it is not a substantial amount. So how is it that new and everyone that is shown in poverty is always shown in rags on the corner? One reason is for the exact reason these people are in this state, money. Relief Organization and Companies raise millions if not billions of dollars a year on the aid of the less fortunate. Is it really tangible to believe that every drop of this money is going straight to these people? No, some of the money has to be going to patrons or even the fundraisers themselves. Even no-profit organizations spend money on bettering their own facilities. These people are not taking out enough money for there to be a question, but money is lost in translation. I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but most people in this world are looking to expedite there way into money. What better way than to pluck the strings of another ones heart and have them willingly give you money? You might ask yourself how this plays into the role of stereotyping, its falls into affect when the media and government gets involved. Media sets up a portrayal of people who are poor and misfortunate as having absolutely nothing so that generous people will want to give more. As seen in hurricane Katrina, the media only showed riots in the street, African Americans looting stores, and people will no clothes on standing in the middle of the street in knee-deep water. You might want to know how embezzlers, the government and the media both have an impact on the stereotype of poverty.

Montana 1948 Practice Essay Essay

Topic: â€Å"At the heart of ‘Montana 1948’ is the conflict between loyalty to the family and duty to the community†. To what extent do you agree? In Larry Watson’s ‘Montana 1948’, there is an overwhelming conflict between loyalty to family and duty to the community. The Hayden family are very loyal to one another but this loyalty goes too far and causes conflict. In the Hayden family, there is a lack of duty to the community and this creates some small-town tension. When people attempt to be loyal to their family, they are unable to be loyal to the community as well, creating inner conflict. In the heart of ‘Montana 1948’ is the conflict between loyalty to family and duty to the community. Loyalty in the Hayden family nurtures the conflicts, as loyal decisions and actions go too far. The Haydens are very loyal to one another and Wesley and Julian (in particular), put their family first. After Frank committed his crimes of rape, David’s father â€Å"knew he was guilty†. Yet Wesley lets Frank get away with it, because they are brothers and in their eyes, family is the first priority. This loyalty creates conflict not just to the wider community, but to their own family as well. The relationship between Julian and Wesley is a frightening one at certain points in the novel. Julian â€Å"wanted, he needed, power†, and he gets this power from the authority he has over his child, Wesley (and the community itself). Julian is dismissive of Frank’s crimes and asserts his dismissive behaviour upon Wesley, influencing the decisions Wesley makes. As a result of Julian’s authority, combined with his intimidating nature and his ‘family first’ views, Wesley fails to make decisions of his own that aren’t affected by the pressures of other people. Wesley informs Gail that Frank will â€Å"have to meet his punishment in the hereafter†, and that he â€Å"won’t do anything to arrange it in this life†. He says these things because he is afraid of Julian. Loyalty in Hayden family creates conflict within the family itself. In the small community of Mercer County, Montana, there is a lack of duty to serve others, and this creates conflict. The lack of duty in the community on Wesley’s behalf is ultimately what kills Marie Little Soldier. (However that’s not to say that Frank’s actions had little to do with her death.) If Wesley’s actions and decisions were different, then Marie’s life could have been saved. Marie’s death creates conflict between the Haydens and the rest of the community, as the lies and deceptions behind her death remain mostly secret. People in power abuse those in the community that have little to none, preventing the less privileged to come forward and this creates tension. Duty to the Mercer County lacks the most in two ways. Firstly, there is prejudice towards the native Indians from a lot of people in town. And  secondly, there is an unjust procedure of law that Wesley carries out when handling his brother, Frank. Wesley is a prime example of a character that does not fulfil his duties to the community. Wesley â€Å"believed Indians, with only a few exceptions, were ignorant, lazy, superstitious, and irresponsible†. Wesley also says that Frank â€Å"didn’t want to be locked up in the jail†, and that he â€Å"would respect that†. The less the community is served by Wesley, the more the conflict builds between them. Duty to the community in Mercer County is lacking, causing tension to build. There is a conflict between the loyalty towards family and the loyalty towards the community, as the loyalty towards both of these groups, struggles to coexist. Wesley is in a tough situation where the choices he makes are vital. But, the decisions are often ones that will affect family in one way, and the community in another. In other words, when his choices make a positive impact on the community, they often have a negative effect on family (and vice versa). Wesley â€Å"believes that in this world people must pay for their crimes†, yet he is torn between justice and family when it comes to forming a resolution. There is conflict within Wesley himself as he battles with the difficult choices between serving the community, and being loyal to his family. If Wesley jails Frank, then he helps the community, but betrays family; and if Wesley lets Frank roam free, he helps his brother, but betrays the community. There is inner conflict residing in Wesley’s thoughts, as loyalty towards family and the loyalty towards the community fail to go hand-in-hand. Larry Watson’s ‘Montana 1948’ is a text that addresses the conflict between loyalty to family and duty to the community. Loyalty in the Hayden family goes further than it should and tension builds among their relationships. The Haydens are inadequate in their obligations to the community, stirring up tension between these two social groups. Loyalty to family can’t coexist with loyalty to the community, fostering the inner conflicts of certain individuals. In Mercer County, family and the community are two separate entities, and the dedications made to either of these groups prove cataclysmic, when loyalty goes too far.

10 Types of Transitions

10 Types of Transitions 10 Types of Transitions 10 Types of Transitions By Mark Nichol Writing is simply a matter of expressing ideas, but as we all know, it’s not so simple after all. One challenge is to coherently connect those ideas. This post lists ten categories of words and phrases one can employ to signal a transition, with several examples for each type. These words and phrases can be used within a sentence as well as at the beginning. Note, too, that many can apply to more than one category. (These groupings are arbitrary, created for the sake of presentation; transitional terms can be organized in various ways.) 1. Addition â€Å"Also, I have to stop at the store on the way home.† â€Å"Besides, it would give me great satisfaction to help you.† â€Å"First, I’d like to thank you for inviting me to speak tonight.† 2. Comparison â€Å"In the same way, the author foreshadows a conflict between two minor characters.† â€Å"Likewise, the sequel was very successful.† â€Å"Similarly, we observed no differences in response rate.† 3. Concession â€Å"Granted, you did not ask ahead of time.† â€Å"Naturally, the final decision is up to her.† â€Å"Of course, he will want to examine the documents himself.† 4. Contrast â€Å"At the same time, what she said has some truth to it.† â€Å"However, I don’t see what that has to do with anything.† â€Å"Otherwise, how can they expect us to comply?† 5. Consequence â€Å"Accordingly, I have consulted with him for a second opinion.† â€Å"As a result, I’m not sure what to do.† â€Å"For this reason, we have decided to halt the project.† 6. Emphasis â€Å"Above all, we must exercise discretion.† â€Å"Certainly, he’ll find out for himself in time.† â€Å"In fact, they’re on their way right now.† 7. Example â€Å"For example, he could have asked for advice first.† â€Å"In particular, I draw your attention to the stain on the carpet.† â€Å"Namely, consider the consequences of your decision.† 8. Sequence â€Å"Earlier, you had mentioned a report.† â€Å"Eventually, we’ll see some improvement.† â€Å"Meanwhile, I’ve been waiting for you.† 9. Space â€Å"Below, you’ll find instructions for assembling the shelf.† â€Å"In the distance, he could see the approaching figure.† Off to one side, a package wrapped in plain paper caught her attention. 10. Summary â€Å"In conclusion, I see no reason to delay any longer.† â€Å"In other words, they’re incompetent.† â€Å"Therefore, your decision leaves me no choice.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Internet Technology, Marketing, and Security Essay - 1

Internet Technology, Marketing, and Security - Essay Example Billions of people visit websites every day, which increases the likelihood that the product be seen by the target audience. If we count the number of users in Facebook its size would be greater than even United Sates. People are spending more time on the internet to do online shopping than the traditional shopping in the malls (Zarrella, 2009). No one likes to wait in the long queues during their holiday season and rather choose and order from home. Answer 2 Advantages of Social Media Marketing The best thing of suing social media marketing is that it is free. Anyone can sign up to their Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest and other countless sites free of cost and can build huge list of followers in their page and post about any new product or new advertisement that the company is coming out with. According to a recent survey by comScore, it was seen that around 98% of the online population living in USA uses Social Media sites, and worldwide out of every 10 people 6 us es social media forums. Hence it is ideal for businesses to reach out to new target customers and new markets where they have no presence. Through these networks professionals can interact and share ideas and discuss about important topic across boundaries in much lesser time than ever imagined. Hence one can use LinkedIn as a more professional site or Twitter to give quick updates or Facebook as more friendly and informal sites. Disadvantages of Social Media Marketing Social media marketing might not be free, but a business needs to take into consideration the time it takes to make new relationships, time it takes to catch their attention, make the sites look great. The company needs to spend time regularly to update their status and read new comments of the customers, like reviewing their suggestions, replying to their comments, accepting any new request etc. Any negative publicity will severely damage their reputation as it is seen worldwide by millions of fans following. Though there are a lot of Social media sites to choose and spread their networks, firms must understand the simple fact that they are just a needle in the haystack. They have to stand out from the crowd. It is easy for anyone to get frustrated with lack of response form the customers; hence they must have a clear thought out strategy. It is not easy to get a Facebook like from millions of people in the internet, and hence they must take their time to build the relationship. Answer 3 Pepsi launched their Pepsi Refresh Project in 2010. Pepsi funded people for their business ideas in areas like health, food and shelter, arts and culture, education and planet and neighborhoods. Pepsi measured the results of their campaign through the level of engagement between their customers and their brands, the level of social impact it created and the brand-equity results it created. It was seen that consumers felt that Pepsi as a cola making company cares about the community and their thinking of Pepsi a s an innovative and forward thinking brand was strengthened. Pepsi’s research showed that the consumers who knew about the Pepsi refresh project started to choose Pepsi over any other brand while buying any cola drink. It was also seen that the social network which Pepsi developed had the largest fan base as compared to any beverage company. It showed both the aspects of how these kinds of programs can be very successful and not

Jeffrey Eugenindes's Middlesex Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Jeffrey Eugenindes's Middlesex - Essay Example This novel showcases Eugenides mastery of imagination as he weaves together the different aspects of this family's history presenting them in an eye opening coming of age tale perfectly fitting for today's modern age. The story does a great job of melding self-conscious artifice and real-world history. Perhaps what is most surprising about Eugenides novel is how he effortlessly establishes the credibility in his narrator in the opening statement, " I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey Michigan, in August of 1974" (Eugenides 3). Here the narrator introduces himself and his sordid history, explaining his grandparent's incestuous marriage and how they vowed to keep it a secret. The center of the story surrounds Cal and his struggles with his sexuality. He says, "I've got a male brain. But I was raised as a girl" (Eugenides). While Cal struggles with this dilemma his entire life, Eugenides fights to prove through these struggles that Cal is really no different than any other American teenager. The novel covers all of Cal's childhood and adolescent obstacles in the hope of normalizing Cal's very un-normal condition. What makes these descriptions interesting is that Cal does not provide any emotion, leaving it up to the reader to judge how Cal must have felt as a result. For instance, when Cal tells of his close encounter in the San Francisco park and how he is nearly raped, the descriptions are virtually devoid of any emotion. Cal says the men in the park tell him "Crawl back into the hole you came out of freak" (Eugenides), but the reader is left on their own to decide how Cal must have felt. The closest description to anything emotional is when Cal says, "I had seventy-five cents to my name. I wished more anything that I could call home" (Eugenides). It seems that Eugenides chose to make Cal's descriptions devoid of any true emotion because he hoped the reader would feel for Cal and understand the emotions he must have been feeling through their own. These emotionless descriptions can be seen again in Cal's pursuit of love where his limited manhood most manifests itself, because Cal is afraid of revealing his body. He says very matte r of factly without expressing how this makes him feel, "And so, without permanence, I have fallen into the routine of my incomplete seductions," (Eugenides). It is evident that the overall goal of this story is paint a picture of American life and the decisions of one particular family in history. Eugenides takes the reader through the minds of each family member, allowing them a peek inside the windows into their souls. He begins with the grandmother, Desdemona, and her escape from her Greek island home and how she first fell in love with her brother lefty. Through the eyes of Desdemona the reader can begin to understand the reasoning behind her incestuous relationship with her brother Lefty. He makes it easy for the reader to understand why the family members decide to do the things that they do, and why they have made specific
